FIRE SCREAM -Translation-

I'm back with my translations with FIRE SCREAM that won my poll on Twitter some time ago! It took me a while to get on with this one but I am picking up the pace again and hoping to release quite a few in quick succession so please look forward to that.

I've been playing a lot of Baldur's Gate 3 in the past half year so this one was a fun one to tackle due to the thematic similarity to Karlach and her story. Noticing that FIRE SCREAM actually has one line that was just「君のために」/ "For you" really tugged at my heartstrings because of how incredibly spot on it was in terms of one very emotional Karlach moment (iykyk). I don't really make AMVs that much anymore, but might consider this pair if Baldur's Gate 3 finally gets its photo mode or I can find the energy to learn and install a camera MOD so I can take better vids in game.

QC honors go to my bud Chinatsu as usual.

FIRE SCREAM

作詞:水樹奈々
作曲:上松範康(Elements Garden)
編曲:菊田大介(Elements Garden)

Japanese English
目覚めよ絶唱-愛の旋律-(全霊を超えていけ)
轟け 命尽きても(永遠に鳴り響け)
がむしゃらに美しく
(rising up! change your world! show must go on!)
Awaken the melody of love¹ (transcend your heart and soul)
Roar even if it exhausts your life (resound on forever)
Recklessly beautifully
(rising up! change your world! show must go on!)
溢れる涙塞ぎ(holdin’ feelings)
心抉る声を殺し(holdin’ place)
それでも掴みたいのは、一体誰の未来?where…?
Dam up the overflowing tears (holdin’ feelings)
Kill the voice that gouges at your heart (holdin’ place)
Exactly whose is the future that you want to grasp regardless? Where...?
目覚めよ絶唱-愛の旋律-(全霊を超えていけ)
轟け 命尽きても(永遠に鳴り響け)
「君のために」
一途な城壁は誇らしく
諸刃の剣を打ち付け真実を試す
僕は何処へ…?
Awaken the melody of love¹ (transcend your heart and soul)
Roar even if it exhausts your life (resound on forever)
"For you"
The devoted ramparts are proudly
striking the double edged sword to test the truth
To where am I...?
応えて 崩れかけた世界に咲いた胸の歌
聴かせて 残酷さえ抱き締める魂-こえ-を
(rising up! change your world!)
(wake up, wake up!)諦めないと
(heat up, heat up!)繋いだ夢は
(grow up, grow up!)君と重ねた笑顔の先にある
誰も止められない
Please answer, the song in my heart that bloomed in this crumbling world
Let me hear, the voice² that embraces even the cruelty
(rising up! change your world!)
(wake up, wake up!) I won't give up
(heat up, heat up!) the dream I tied together
(grow up, grow up!) lies beyond the smiles I shared with you
No one can stop it
(rising up! change your world! show must go on!)(rising up! change your world! show must go on!)
何度否定-やみ-に晒され(keep in mind)
何度叩きつけられても(keep in shape)
僕が僕であり続ける覚悟さえあればいい
How many times have I been exposed to darkness³ (keep in mind)
No matter how many times I get struck down (keep in shape)
All I need is the determination to continue being me
貫け 潤んだ空 受け止め導く虹のように
放って 混沌-ノイズ-に囚われた本能を
(rising up! change your world!)
Penetrate the dewed sky like a catching and guiding rainbow
Let go of your instincts trapped within the noise
(rising up! change your world!)
寄り添うほど深まる残響は
迷い打ち消し 明日へと誘う
さあ、手を握って…
The reverberations that deepen the closer we are
eliminate your doubts and invite you to tomorrow
come on, take my hand...
応えて 崩れかけた世界に咲いた胸の歌
聴かせて 残酷さえ抱き締める魂-こえ-を
(rising up! change your world!)
(wake up, wake up!)諦めないと
(heat up, heat up!)繋いだ夢は
(grow up, grow up!)君と重ねた笑顔の先にある
誰も止められない
Please answer, the song in my heart that bloomed in this crumbling world
Let me hear, the voice² that embraces even the cruelty
(rising up! change your world!)
(heat up, heat up!) the dream I tied together
(grow up, grow up!) lies beyond the smiles I shared with you
No one can stop it

Translation notes:
  1. Firstly, we have a nod to Symphogear here as this is the opening song for the series, by having the kanji of 絶唱 (zesshou) as the full name of the series is Senki Zesshou Symphogear, but we are using the reading of melody of love (愛の旋律) for it instead. There isn't really a good word for 絶唱 in English, but roughly it means a song that's so superb that it's basically divine.

  2. Here she uses voice (こえ) as the reading for the kanji which means soul, so we can say the idea is that your voice IS your soul.

  3. For the kanji 否定 (denial) she uses the reading of やみ which means darkness.

  4. And finally, here we have 混沌 (chaos/confusion) read as the katakana noise (ノイズ), which kind of is also a nod to Symphogear as the enemies our heroines fight are called that.

  5. Closer as in emotionally, not in terms of physical distance.
