Turn the World -Translation-

Trying to keep the momentum in translating lyrics so I am back again with Turn the World! I quite like the message in this one so it was easy to motivate myself to get to it in a pretty timely manner after finishing Link or Chains. I also love the idea behind the cover image that Nana explained during the FC Event - how the reflection beneath her is still looking back to the past while the actual her is heading towards the future.

Lots of poetic readings of kanji in this one, so there's quite a few translation notes at the end to unpack them all - bear with me!

QC shoutout to my friend Chinatsu once again.

Turn the World

作詞:ヨシダタクミ(saji)、水樹奈々
作曲:サカノウエヨースケ(Blue Bird's Nest)
編曲:日比野裕史×渡辺徹(Blue Bird's Nest)

Japanese English
Don’t take a life of imitation
I want to stay true to myself
Can’t stop the wheel of fortune
Don’t take a life of imitation
I want to stay true to myself
Can’t stop the wheel of fortune
Don’t take a life of imitation
I want to stay true to myself
Can’t stop the wheel of fortune
Don’t take a life of imitation
I want to stay true to myself
Can’t stop the wheel of fortune
あっ!!という間に時間は
僕だけを置いて ぐるぐると廻る
怠惰に生きていたんじゃ
気が付けば老いて枯れてゆく
In the blink of an eye, time
spins round and round, while leaving only me behind
If I just live lazily
I'd age and wither away before I knew it
向き合えない現実-リアル-
踏み出すことを
恐れないで
We’ll work it out!!
何もせずに
諦めてしまう前に
reality¹ you cannot face
Don't be afraid of
taking a step forward
We'll work it out!!
Before giving up
without even lifting a finger
人は誰も孤独の中で
絆-ヒカリ-を求める
時に他人-それ-は眩しくて
痛みや嫉妬-とげ-に変わるけれど
君がくれた燈(ともしび)が
明日を紡いでゆく
道なき未知を 探して
心のままに my soul
Within loneliness we are all
seeking light²
sometimes it³ is blinding
and turns into pain and barbs⁴, but
the torch you gave me
keeps weaving a tomorrow
I'm searching the pathless unknown
following my heart, my soul
どんな
絶望の雨に打たれても
構わない
未来へ
手を伸ばせBeliever
No matter what kind of
rain of despair batters me
I don't mind
Towards the future
stretch your hand, believer
Ah…
What's up?
Ah…
What's up?
相も変わらず世界は
揚げ足取りで お忙しそうね
正論振り翳(かざ)しては
勝ち誇った顔で嘲笑う
As always the world
seems busy finding faults
Proclaiming their sound reasoning
while sneering with a triumphant face
報われない日々
逃げ出すことに慣れてないか?
泣き喚いたって
現状-いま-は変わらない
Get ready,Turn-the-World!!
Unrewarding days
Aren't you used to running away?
Even if you cry out
the now⁵ won't change
Get ready,Turn-the-World!!
何が正しくて
何が間違いかなんて
どうでもいい
今日を足掻いて 足掻いて
明日を希望と呼ぶんだ
夢と謳った
嘘が嘘でなくなるまで
生きてやるんだ そうさ
魂-いのち-の灯を燃やして
What is right
what is wrong
it doesn't matter
Struggle, struggle through today
for tomorrow is called hope
Till the lie called a dream
stops being a lie
I'll keep living, yeah that's right
set the light of life⁶ ablaze
どうか、その決意-おもい-
疑わないで
信じろ 自分を
Please, do not doubt
that feeling⁷
believe in yourself
高い壁に
阻まれたとしても
譲れない 到達点-居場所-
僕を待つ
Even if obstructed
by a towering wall
an unwavering place I belong⁸ to
is waiting for me
人は誰も 彷徨いながら
魂-いのち-を賭して
禍福糾纆も総てを
綯-つむ-いで軌跡と呼ぶんだ
君と叶えたい夢が
僕を支えている
変えてみせるさ どんな
結末-みらい-になろうと my way
きっと
While wandering we are all
betting our lives⁶
Even all of the entwining happiness and misfortunes
we call spinning⁹ a trajectory
The dream I want to achieve with you
is supporting me
I'll try changing it yeah, no matter
what kind of future¹⁰ comes along it'll go my way
surely
Don’t take a life of imitation
I want to stay true to myself
Don’t take a life of imitation
I want to stay true to myself

Translation notes:
  1. No difference with the kanji, 現実, and what's said, リアル, in terms of meaning, as both mean reality - just using the katakana word for it instead kind of puts emphasis on it within the line.

  2. The kanji we have here, means bonds/connection but the chosen reading is light (ヒカリ). So the idea here is that the bonds you have with others are a light within the loneliness.

  3. The reading that (それ)  refers to the light mentioned in the previous line (and note), but the kanji we have here is 他人 which means other people. So the whole thought here is "within loneliness, we are all seeking light which is sometimes blinding" with the subtext of "within loneliness, we are all seeking connection, though sometimes other people are blinding" making this more about your bonds with others and how they save us from loneliness.

  4. Here we have the kanji 嫉妬 which means jealousy, but the chosen reading is thorns for which I went with the synonym of barbs since it kinda fits the context better imo, as that can also be taken as saying something mean about someone.

  5. Here the kanji of 現状, which means present situation, is read as now. Since the meanings are pretty close I don't think this really needs any further explanation - though having it as now kind of has the nuance that the future (aka what comes later) CAN be changed even if the now cannot.

  6. This particular one we have appears two times throughout the song, where the kanji for which means soul, is read as life. I guess the idea here is that unless your soul is fulfilled you aren't really living.

  7. For this one, we have 決意, which means determination but is read as feeling. Pretty straightfoward since it's just basically telling you to trust the feeling of determination here.

  8. Here we have 到達点 which means destination but is this time read as place (you belong), which gives it the nuance of the place you belong being where you are headed in life.

  9. is the kanji here which means twist/twine (a rope) while the reading is spinning (as you would a yarn). So not much difference here, though I feel like twining the rope goes better with the previous line, but spinning goes with the mention of time spinning round we had early in the song and is used here since we are still talking about the passage of time.

  10. And last but not least, we have the kanji for 結末, which means outcome, but read as future giving it the vibe that we are talking about the outcome of your life here.
